To Pay or Not to Pay: Breaking Down the “Coaching is Too Expensive” Myth

We’ve all got our own ideas about what’s worth paying for and what feels like too much. But if you scratch beneath the surface, it’s not really about cost, it’s about values and priorities.
Here’s an example: I am forever buying fabric, even when I have no clue what I’ll use it for. Sewing is my happy place, so I spend money on it. I also prioritise family holidays. Travel isn’t “just” a splurge; it’s an investment in our family life and wellbeing.
So here’s the real kicker: why do we find it so hard to invest in a life coach? Why do we hesitate when it comes to investing in ourselves? And where on earth does that sneaky little voice come from that whispers, “I’m not worth it”?
The golden word here is investment.
When you shift your thinking from “I can’t afford coaching” to “It’s time to invest in myself”, everything changes. Suddenly, you’re not staring at the price tag; you’re looking at the value. Coaching provides you with tools, clarity, and confidence that continue to serve you long after the sessions end. It helps you live the life you actually want, not just the one you’ve settled for.
But let’s flip the coin. What’s the real cost of not investing?
If you’re even thinking about coaching, chances are it’s because you feel stuck. Maybe it’s your career, maybe your relationship, or maybe it’s that low hum of “there’s got to be more to life than this.” Staying stuck can cost you years of happiness, confidence, and even income. So ask yourself: which is more expensive, investing in coaching, or playing it safe and never going after what you truly want?
Now, I can hear you asking: But what about podcasts, books, or courses? Aren’t they enough?
Don’t get me wrong, those resources are fantastic. I use them myself and recommend them frequently. But here’s the difference: a podcast can’t sit across from you, look you in the eye, and say, “I hear you. I believe in you. Let’s get you unstuck.”
That’s the power of coaching. A coach knows your goals, challenges, and dreams. They keep you accountable. They cheer you on when you’re winning and pick you up when you stumble. That kind of personalised support? It’s priceless.
And I know this firsthand. I’ve invested in two different coaches, one to help me figure out my next chapter after education, and another to help me set up my business. And honestly? I wouldn’t be here writing this blog, building a social media presence, or running my own website if it weren’t for them. For years, I longed for these things but had no idea how to make them happen. Coaching gave me the clarity, courage, and structure I needed. And the ripple effects flowed into everything, my confidence, my relationships, my career, my wellbeing. When I’m leaning into coaching, writing, learning, and growing, I’m simply a different (and better) version of myself.
Here’s the other good bit: coaching isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are group programs, workshops, mentoring sessions, and consultations to fit different budgets. Many coaches (me included!) also share free content through blogs, newsletters, and socials, so support doesn’t end with paid sessions.
So, if you’re standing at that crossroads, wondering if now’s the time, let me leave you with this:
What’s really “too expensive”—coaching, or the cost of staying stuck?
