Why Coaching Works: The Power of Listening, Reflection, and Action

Many years ago, I worked for a mentoring program for primary-aged children at risk. These were kids who didn’t have anyone in their corner, no cheer squad, no safe listener, no one showing up just for them.
Each mentor was matched with a child and spent one hour a week together, engaging in activities such as chatting, kicking a ball, painting, cooking, and shooting hoops. Nothing over-the-top. Just time. The magic was that the kids knew, rain or shine, every single week at that same time, their mentor was turning up just for them.
And oh, the transformation. Kids who had been withdrawn and lost suddenly found their spark again. Some became school leaders. Many started to thrive academically. As a mentor myself, I can say this: it wasn’t just the children who grew. We, the mentors, walked away each week with our hearts fuller, and our perspectives shifted.
The secret wasn’t fancy programs or endless resources. It was simple: turning up, listening deeply, and being fully present.
And honestly? That’s the very heartbeat of coaching.
When you work with a coach, you get someone who listens, someone who is fully engaged, not half-distracted, not waiting to jump in with their own story, but who really listens. No judgment. No agenda. Just full attention. Do you know how rare that is? For many clients, it’s the first time they’ve been brave enough to say what they really want, and to have someone genuinely hear them. That kind of listening is powerful. It fosters trust and safety, creating a space where you can let your guard down and just be yourself.
But coaching doesn’t stop there. Listening opens the door, and reflection is what helps you see what’s behind it. Coaches mirror your words back, sometimes holding up a spotlight to the very patterns or limiting beliefs that have kept you stuck. Those “aha” moments where you suddenly think, ohhh, that’s why I keep tripping myself up? That’s reflection at work. And really, when was the last time you gave yourself the luxury of pausing long enough to notice what’s been holding you back?
Then comes the kicker: action.
Because let’s be honest, clarity without action is just a nice idea. A coach helps you turn insight into goals that are actually doable, and then holds you accountable to keep moving forward. That accountability is gold. It’s the difference between saying “this year I’ll get fit” (while the gym shoes stay under the bed) and actually following through and having someone in your corner, cheering, nudging, believing in you, even when you wobble? That changes everything.
I’ve lived it.
With my first coach, I began the process of finally leaving the safe but increasingly frustrating comfort zone of teaching and stepping into a new chapter as a qualified coach. My second coach, Laura, helped me take it further by guiding me through certification, business-building, and fully backing myself. Both experiences lit me up. Having someone believe in me and help me believe in myself was honestly the best investment I’ve ever made.
Here’s what I’ve learned: coaching isn’t a quick fix. It’s about building skills, confidence, and self-trust you’ll carry long after your sessions end. Just like my students who groan every time I mention TEEL (academic) paragraphs (they’ll thank me for it later when their essays actually shine), coaching gives you tools you’ll come back to again and again.
That’s why it works: listening creates space, reflection sparks awareness, and action builds momentum. It’s the trifecta that moves you from stuck → clear → empowered.
So, let me ask you:What would shift if you finally had someone listening deeply to you? What might open up if someone held up the mirror so you could see your own brilliance and blind spots? And how would it feel to have someone in your corner, keeping you accountable, cheering you on, and refusing to let you shrink back into doubt?
That’s the power of coaching.
Like the mentoring program, everyone wins. Both giving and receiving are gifts that ripple out with joy, confidence, and courage.
